Kathmandu. Every year on the day of Krishna Ashtami, the festival of 'Shri Krishna Janmashtami' is celebrated on Friday by Vedic Sanatan Dharma devotees across the country by worshiping Lord Krishna with devotion.
On the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, devotees thronged Krishna temples across the country from early morning. Since Lord Krishna, the pioneer of Jnana Yoga, Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga, was born in Dwaparayuga on the midnight of Bhadrakrishna Ashtami, this day is called 'Shri Krishna Janmashtami' and the night is called 'Mohratri'. On this day, in Krishna temples across the country, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Krishna, preaching, chanting hymns, especially women and men and staying awake all night.
It is believed that Sri Krishna, who was born as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu to protect all human beings from injustice, tyranny and demonic tendencies, inspired the human community for good deeds by standing for the truth throughout his life.
On the day of Janmashtami, a big fair is held at the famous Krishna temple in Mangalbazar, Patan. Since ancient times, there is a large presence of devotees in the Krishna temple of Patan. Likewise, devotees have also thronged Navatandham in Gothatar, Kageshwari Manohara Municipality-8 in the north-eastern part of the capital.
There is also a crowd of devotees at the Krishna temple located in the office premises of the International Sri Krishna Consciousness Association in Budhanilkanth located in the northern part. On this occasion, various religious organizations of Kathmandu take out processions and chariot processions with tableaus of Lord Krishna. Shobhayatra and Rathayatra are held on the day of Bhadra Krishna Navami.
On the midnight of Ashtami, the Ratha Yatra is performed on the day of Navami to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. 'Shrimad Bhagavata Gita' is considered a holy book, uttered by Shri Krishna himself while preaching to Arjuna, one of the Pandavas involved in the battle with the Kauravas in Kurukshetra. This book, also known as Gita in short, is believed to have been translated into the most languages in the world.
It is mentioned in classical and mythological texts including Mahabharata that Shri Krishna, who showed his strange pastimes from childhood, destroyed demonic tendencies like Putana, Kangsha, Jarasandha and Shishupala. The context of Arjuna taking incarnation in Kurukshetra to protect those who support the truth and kill those who support falsehood is also mentioned in various texts.
The practice of decorating children in the form of Shri Krishna at home has also started to grow in the Nepalese community. Schools also celebrate this cultural festival by dressing children as Krishna and Radha. Devotees who have fasted all day today stay awake at night and welcome Shri Krishna. On this occasion, the government also gave a public holiday across the country today.
On this occasion, Swami Shyam Chetan Baba emphasized on the need to understand Shri Krishna Tattva and put it into practice in the program organized by Vedic Udbodhan Sangh today.
