Meera Rana, the singer of hundreds of songs including Mero Pauma Aaj, Makhamali Cholo, Tu Deu Ya Nadeu and others, was in the mood to start a normal daily life when she met Meera Rana at her home in Chandol, Kathmandu.
His daily life in Riyaz was over that day. She was waiting for us amidst her busy schedule. During the one-hour conversation, we stood in the latter part of his life and turned over some old pages of memory.
Even though age is approaching the 75th spring of his life, there has been no dimming in the melodiousness of his voice, the spirit of sadhana and his dedication to music. A river of 6 decades of his musical practice is still flowing.
In her active age, she sang songs of different genres, but music is not an audio medium or a profession. She considers the continuous flow of life as an unbroken lamp of raga and sadhana. Even when this evening of life comes to raga, an eternal contentment is reflected on his face. Now even more, he has no desire for wealth, nor for gambling in the modern viral race.
That may be why, when she reaches this age, she considers the pure love given by anonymous listeners from all over the country to be the greatest treasure of her life. This selfless respect and goodwill received from the public is worth billions of times more to him than real money.
Indeed, this light of selfless sadhana, simplicity and sadhana is the immortal pillar of Meera Rana's eight-decade life journey.
Looking back on the past, memories of Meera's children, who grew up in the poor environment of Kamalpokhari, are still fresh.
At that time, with the beginning of the recession, school holidays were held. Even Meenpachas had a two-month holiday, so it was different. While going to school, carrying the books on one's arm would give the body balance and a kind of natural exercise. There was a supernatural pride and joy in my heart.
Now he gets a shock that those times will never come back. Well, she is living in that memory.
At that time, the arrival of Dashain was also a condition of his own child welfare.
Little Meera would have realized that Dashain had come only when she saw people carrying away the khasi from the market leading to Kamalpokhari.
After that, she kept insisting her father to bring Khasi to her house in the same way. And that innocent stubbornness of a child who thought that Dashain had really arrived after bringing Khasi to the house is still etched in his memory.
However, at the tender age of 18, she spent 57 happy springs of her life with her life partner after being bound by the Parinaya Sutra.
As a child, she was stubborn to buy khasi from her father, even her husband never let her childish happiness die for 57 years.
This Dashain is becoming her first Dashain without her husband as her husband's Barkhi work has ended recently. Standing at this stage of life, the sons had sent their mother to pick Khasi only a few days before with their father's company.
He believes that even though time, technology and environment have changed, the cultural essence has not changed.
According to him, the eternal roots of Bhagwati worship, Navratri rituals and rituals never change. And he says that people do all these things for happiness.
For him, true happiness does not come from the appearance of others. It should bloom within itself. He says that only if he is happy, he can spread the fragrance of happiness to the world.
Dashain with Gopal Yonjan
Meera Rana says that there are two main people who gave a certain direction and height to her musical life. Gopal Yonjan, a great creator who gave birth to a father and taught singing on stage.
She also considers Yonjan as her guru. She met Yonjan for the first time in 2026. Since then, his relationship with Yonjan was established as Gurucheli.
By coincidence, Meera Rana's birthday also falls on the day of Vijaya Dashami. Therefore, every Dashain, she used to sit in front of the lit lamp and the statue of Lord Buddha in the shrine of Gopal Yonjan and receive red tika and blessings from the hands of the Guru.
During her musical journey, Meera spent 35 years in the music branch of Radio Nepal. She collaborated with dozens of artists including Narayan Gopal, Gopal Yonjan, Natikaji, Shiv Shankar, Koili Devi, Tara Devi, Chandra Sharma. However, to celebrate Dashain, the relationship was only with Gopal Yonjan.
Feeling with the new generation
In Meera Rana's musical philosophy, lyricist, musician and singer/singer are the three wheels of the same musical chariot. Without the equal effort and dedication of these three parties, timeless music cannot be born.
When he comes to this stage of life, he does not have to do business, nor earn money. He thinks that he will enjoy the fragrance of the tunes created by him by letting the talents of the new generation sing them.
That is why she is also collaborating with new generation artists. Singer Menuka Paudel, Pramod Kharel, Shiv Periyar are some names. On the other hand, she is looking positively at the fact that the artist is the head of the country.
Can you feed your stomach even by singing songs first? Today, a young engineer and an artist who understands music is leading the country in front of a society that discourages artists. What could be more happy for an artist?,' she says enthusiastically.
Now she tells him to wait for a few years for better results.
The journey of life does not always flow in a straight line.
6 years ago, Meera Rana's life was attacked by a deadly disease like cancer. Soon after, the corona virus hit. His musical mind was disturbed when he had to rest his voice for a long time under the doctor's instructions. However, his indomitable self-confidence and unwavering loyalty to music did not let him fall. Defeating the disease, she was able to return to the music of the harmonium.
Today, even at the age of 75, his daily life has become a disciplined part of Sadhana. From 8 AM to 12 PM, she does Riyaz continuously for 4 hours in her room, communicating with the screens of the harmonium.
Transforming her personal struggle into a social responsibility, she has recently established 'Mira Rana Cancer Society'. Nowadays, she has started donating the cash amount of the small honors or awards she receives to this organization.
She said that from the money collected, folk, modern, classical and pop musicians, singers and helpless artists who are suffering from cancer will be helped in their medical treatment.
