19 August, Kathmandu. Electric vehicle sales in Australia have set a new record as Chinese vehicles continue to grow in popularity.
According to the data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the share of battery electric vehicles (BEV) reached 24.9 percent of the total new vehicles sold in Australia in August. Previously, this share was 23.3 percent in June.
Due to rising fuel prices, the market share of electric vehicles exceeded 20 percent for the first time last May. Since then, EV sales have been above 20 percent for the fourth consecutive month. According to FCAI, overall sales of EVs increased by 171 percent during the same period this year compared to August 2025.

In the month of August, 5 Chinese companies made it to the list of the 10 most popular vehicle brands in Australia. These include BW, GWM, MG, Gili and Chery.
By selling 8,231 new vehicles in August, the Chinese brand BW has managed to occupy the second place after the Japanese brand Toyota. In August 2025, the sales of BVD were only 4,877.
Similarly, another Chinese brand, Geely, has sold 4,504 vehicles, jumping by more than 1,000 percent compared to the same month last year (401).
Looking at the figures for the first eight months of 2026, i.e. up to the end of August, BWD has sold a total of 68,423 vehicles in Australia. This number is 108 percent higher than the same period in 2025 (32,839).
Targeting this growing EV craze, FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said the Australian vehicle market was undergoing significant structural change.
